“In keeping with our highest standards of quality control, Siemens has brought together a team of local specialists and international experts to apply the global Combino modification program locally, as a precautionary measure to ensure the longevity of all 59 Melbourne trams. We identified the issue with some trams showing minor fatigue for their age that is not acceptable to our standards, and we are addressing this proactively.
Please be assured that public safety is in no way compromised, Siemens is undertaking this program at our expense because we are committed to supporting the investment of our customer, and once upgraded, the lifespan of the trams will be extended considerably. Furthermore, recent collision incidents have demonstrated the exceptional structural integrity of the Melbourne Combino trams.
Services are expected to run as usual while the program is carried out. Siemens provided around $90,000 to Yarra Trams for the mini-refurbishment of five Z Class trams to run prior to, during and after the program, to ensure no disruption to the timetable as a result of our works. Siemens maintenance team has changed its work practises and work hours to ensure maximum availability of the trams during peak times, and we understand that Yarra Trams will also run other classes of tram in place of the Combinos that are taken into the workshop.
Our Combino trams feature 100% low level floors, which means they have no steps, and wide double-doors, providing greater accessibility for the mobility impaired and parents with prams in particular. Improved safety features such as more hand rails, grab bars and stanchions, and the open design of the floor space that enables passengers to move more easily throughout the tram provides passengers with a more comfortable journey”
