The Alfred Hospital and Siemens Form Ultrasound Partnership

Melbourne, 11 July 2005

The Alfred Hospital and Siemens have today announced the formation of a partnership to advance the testing of a new wave of ultrasound technology.

The ultrasound partnership will see Siemens in Australia supply The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne with a new SONOLINE Antares™ ultrasound solution which includes the associated software to produce high quality clinical and investigational vascular images using a unique technology called Clarify VE.

The Clarify VE technology is a solution offered by Siemens which provides outstanding clarity of blood vessels contributing to a more definitive and immediate diagnosis of soft tissue injuries like muscle tears, superficial and deep vein thrombosis, tumors and heart and lung examinations.

Executive General Manager Siemens Medical Solutions, Richard Guest, said the formation of the partnership with The Alfred Hospital represented an exciting opportunity to clinically road-test the performance of ultrasound solutions in what are sometimes the most extreme of circumstances.

The Alfred Hospital has a reputation within the medical industry in stretching the operating capabilities of medical equipment to the absolute limit with an enormous range and quantity of patients under care.

“The ultrasound is a cost effective, fast and safe solution for front-line medical imaging emitting no ionising radiation and acting as reliable screening tool,” said Mr Guest.

Head of Radiology at The Alfred Hospital, Professor Ken Thomson, said the formation of the partnership would strengthen the reputation of the hospital which will become a reference site for ultrasound diagnosis.

“The technology based ultrasound solution offered by Siemens offers hospital employees a simple operating system and outstanding image clarity and sharpness,” said Professor Thomson.

“We are looking forward to the opportunity to extend our knowledge of ultrasound diagnosis to complement existing expertise in magnetic resonance, x-ray and computed tomography imaging.”

The Siemens SONOLINE Antares™ ultrasound system has over 90 patented technologies. The ultrasound solution offers ergonomic design which complements high technology micro processing power with an integrated ultrasound workstation

With the SONOLINE Antares, interactivity between operator, system controls, and the image is streamlined. The user interface and keyboard are designed to anticipate ultrasound workflow. Based on a common operating system structure, the ultrasound screen is easy to use and follow, anticipating and executing user instructions.
